La veille de Noël, le cadavre d'un homme habillé en Père Noël tombe du ciel sur Central Park. Il a été jeté d'un avion. Toutefois, ce n'est pas la chute qui a causé la mort d'Edmund Smith, mais une balle. Il habitait un immeuble de seconde catégorie dans le Bronx. Ses plus proches voisins, les Cabot, le décrivent comme un bon samaritain. Il aidait Beth Cabot à combattre une société de crédits qui lui avait fait perdre sa maison. Beth était actuellement en procès. Côté privé, le petit monde familial de Castle s'écroule : sa fille Alexis lui annonce qu'elle ne sera pas présente au réveillon car elle a un petit ami
